Hi, my name is Christina and I’m happy to be a patient of Dr. Tanners.  I first was introduced to Dr. Tanner the day after Christmas, last year in 2019, when I was having excruciating pain that I have never experienced. It was in one of my teeth that I had just gotten a filling in a couple weeks prior with my old dentist. The pain was so unbearable I was just on my knees and I didn’t know what to do. I started the day after Christmas because I thought no one is going to answer on Christmas but the day after I just started calling numbers. Sure enough, Dr. Tanner answered and I was so shocked and pleasantly surprised that he answered himself and was so quick to welcome me in that day. I came in that day and he was able to take care of it. It’s been such a blessing to have a dentist that I can trust, a dentist that’s really been there for me by text, by phone, making sure that I’m ok. My husband felt like he could trust him too. My husband is from Nigeria, growing up totally afraid of the dentist never went. So, we both just got a really good feeling when we came here. I’m just thankful we have him now and I’m not gonna leave. I wish I would’ve had him all my years growing up. I’ve had terrible experiences at the dentist. As a kid most of my teeth didn’t fall out by themselves so they were all pulled. I’ve had tons of cavities, root canal, just a bunch that’s gone on. I just never felt like I could trust that dentist that I’ve been at except for the one when I was a kid. It’s kind of made me leery of just the whole process and I felt like some dentists are just quick to want to sell me a new filling or whatever the case may be. But not here and that’s what I really appreciate. Sometimes I wonder, should I just get it. I don’t know. But I just feel like he’s very thoughtful and he’s considerate of my personal health. He’s willing to be patient with me. He’s real good, especially at giving the shots. I’ve been amazed it doesn’t hurt at all. I’ve had really good experiences. I would recommend anyone come here especially if you’re kind of nervous or you’ve had bad experiences. I think you can really trust him and I think that his intentions are pure and he’s really trying to help people. That’s how it’s made me feel. Even with my kids, he’s trying to make them feel real comfortable as toddlers. He’s let them just interact with him really well and given them the opportunity to feel comfortable too. Today I just got a cavity taken care of and a broken filling. I’m just thankful to be here now and I feel like I’m in a good spot as I move forward in the future. I hope that everyone else can feel comfortable with their dentist. If you don’t have one, this is the one to go to. I’m really thankful to be here.

When I initially came to Dr. Tanner I suffered really severe TMJ pain to the point I couldn’t even eat apples or carrots and I could barely smile or open my mouth. Over the course of our treatment which lasted about two years or three years, I ended up being able to finally live a normal productive teenage life and not have to worry about pain in my mouth. Now I can smile and eat apples and carrots just like normal people. I couldn’t be happier!

“I’m Dr. Howard Elkin. I’m an integrative cardiologist and functional medicine practitioner. I was here visiting my daughter in Ashland. I told her to look for a biological dentist and she came across Dr. Tanner. I was really impressed when I came today. My 1.5 year old grandson has two cavities. A dentist can fix a cavity but Dr. Tanner’s approach is more holistic-minded. He was looking into the nutrition and things that my daughter can do to avoid this in the future with the children. Also, with the new one because she’s pregnant again. It’s really a pleasure to spend time with Dr. Tanner and seeing his work.”

“Hi, my name is Kippy and I am thrilled to just be starting my procedure of airway orthodontics with Dr. Tanner. I’m here because when I was 24 I was told I would need surgery where they would break my jaw and they would put in a metal thing and then the jaw would grow back, they would stretch the jaw out and I would need to drink through a straw for two weeks to recover. This was all because I have an extremely recessed class II jaw which two dentists told me is the most recessed class II jaw they have ever seen, one being a dentist who was about 74 that people came all over new England to see in Vermont. So, I have been told by many dentists to get this procedure and whenever I tuned in meditating I got “no”. And then I got Lyme disease in 2003 and now it’s 2020. I healed it naturally but I’ve been having one heck of a time healing the ruckus it caused. About a number of months ago I was lying in bed realizing that my tongue was totally blocking my jaw and it was hard to breathe. I was thinking this is really serious. How is this affecting me when I’m sleeping? Of course, out of the blue, three different types of health practitioners told me, “Go see Dr. Tanner.” It happened so fast that three totally different practitioners said this and they were so excited to send me here. When I came here I learned that I have had undiagnosed sleep apnea my entire life. I’m 58 and it’s 2020. It was amazing that
I didn’t know and I wasn’t a snorer so I didn’t know. The fact that I haven’t been getting oxygen for a huge amount of my 24hour cycle is pretty serious. I am really excited to start this. I just know that my healing from Lyme will accelerate prolifically. I have heard incredible things about this treatment from so many practitioners who told me about so many friends and clients who have benefited from this. It’s a happy office. It’s really fun coming here.”

“So our daughter Rohen had the treatment here. We didn’t really notice that there were problems necessarily but we came in to get her teeth checked and to get them cleaned and when Dr. Tanner started asking us questions if she was having trouble sleeping some light bulbs went off because that’s a real struggle for us. She had been waking up multiple times throughout the night and it was affecting her and the whole family because we couldn’t sleep. Dr. Tanner started explaining it to us and the treatment and what it would look like and some of the implications of having the smaller jaw and not having the airway to breathe. As a nurse it really scared me thinking that’s what waking my daughter up at night is that she can’t breathe. She’s not getting the air that she needs. My husband and I talked about it and did some research and we both came to the conclusions that there was an option we definitely had to do the treatment for her. We were a little nervous because she was not even four years
old when she started and we weren’t really sure how she would do with the impressions and the mouthpiece. She’s actually been really intrigued by the process and loves coming in for her checkups and holding the mirror and all of that. That actually wasn’t an issue at all. It’s been a few months since we started and she’s definitely sleeping better. It’s more her sister that wakes her up now and hopefully not her airway. It’s been a really good experience and been so much easier than we expected thus far.”

“So, what originally brought me to Dr. Tanner’s is I was experiencing TMJ and bite issues. Over the course of a couple of years we put on an initial expander and a Myobrace treatment which really did help my TMJ symptoms and also corrected the bite because it put my teeth in the right spot and everything. I began sleeping better and just generally everything was just really coming together and it was feeling awesome. Then we moved on to our next appliance and I’m not sure how many we did, I think about three. Over the course of now four years I’ve been feeling great and my bite is complete and I am actually done with my work as of today. I’m very excited. It was all done without braces. It really just goes to show that you can really get that perfect smile without conventional treatment.”

So I have been looking for a holistic dentist for as long as I’ve lived in the rogue valley which has been since 1987 and I never found anybody. I’ve always got my ears open and Dr. Tanner was mentioned to me by a chiropractor who had come here from a naturopathic clinic and he recommended him highly. I wasn’t real happy with my dentist, he seemed like he was very aggressive and at that point, he wanted to do 2 crowns and 2 fillings in my mouth. One of the crowns I knew was on a tooth that just has decay on the root and the tooth was fine. So I was very hesitant about that. It seemed like ever since I had been with him, every time I would get my teeth examined I would have all this work to be done even though I have really good dental hygiene. So I just wanted something different and he had never given me any answers about how to take care of my teeth or what to do to prevent that. I felt like “Wow there’s got to be something more!” I’m a naturopath so I have a lot of resources so I do a lot. So anyway, I decided to check out Dr. Tanner and he examined my mouth, and instead of 2 crowns and 2 fillings, he did 1 filling and that was it. My teeth feel great. He is much more conservative, he uses no toxins in his clinic, you can talk to him. He’s got great personality, very personable. He loves kids, I know that. I asked him what toothpaste he used and he said “Coconut oil and baking soda.” And I was just like “This is my guy!” And he has answers like I can ask him “Well what about this and what about that?” and he gives me suggestions. He wanted me to add more minerals to my water, so I add liquid minerals to my water. He suggested not eating between meals so I do that. Today we talked about taping your mouth shut at night, there are not too many people you can talk to about that and the benefits of that. So anyway, I highly recommend Dr. Tanner. He’s the only holistic doctor I know of in Southern Oregon who is really holistic, who listens, who cares. He really does care about your teeth, I can tell that. Anyway, thank you.

My name is Matt and I just finished my first evaluation, consultation with Dr.Tanner. My son is 8 years old and he has been struggling with breathing, basically and crowded teeth. He has some over-lapping teeth. He has struggled with allergies a lot and mouth breathing. I was referred to Dr.Tanner by a friend. The importance of mouth breathing has been on my radar for a little while, having learned about it through an alternative health podcast that I listen to. I feel so excited about this and I’ve learned a lot. Dr. Tanner is incredibly friendly, I just feel so hopeful for my son and his overall health. That is my genuine sentiment right now. I did learn some very specific things about the human stress response and the heart rate and how the tongue affects that in the mouth, how that affects behavioral issues. We saw a lot of before and after pictures of children, young adults, and adults with breathing issues and behavioral issues, health issues, and how all of that in large respect were completely reversed by widening the jaw, making room for the tongue, and opening the airway. So I am really, really excited and I would encourage anybody to at least learn more about this if they’re curious and if they have mouth issues or if they know anybody that does. Check it out!

I’m Dr. Debra Frances. I’m a nature pathic physician, I started out as a registered nurse. Within my profession, I am pretty well known because I have taught at the college and I’ve taught at conferences and so forth. Like many people, I have had many dental experiences but the thing that really impresses me about Dr. Tanner is that he is so beyond holistic. He is very nature pathic he really thinks about the underlying cause of what’s going on and the deeper things that are going on. He doesn’t overtreat, he really listens to the patient and in naturopathy, we have this idea of total akasam. Which is looking at the underlying cause and what he is looking at is why is the person grinding and what’s going on with why the jaw is placed the way it is. Going back to what Weston Price talks about with his work in terms of malnutrition, the chronic malnutrition that we’ve had with the way that we eat. We are not eating whole foods, we are not eating close to nature and over the generations, it has really changed the structure of the jaw. Dr. Tanner is really addressing that and doing therapies to actually begin to shift the jaw so that there’s more room for our tongue, there’s not sleep apnea. Oxygen is essential; we can live without water longer than we can live without oxygen. So many of our health problems we are seeing a lot of times people are being treated with oxygen therapies and that sort of thing. And really if we can just be getting our own oxygen by not having our jaw retracted and blocking our airway then we are so much more ahead of the game. So I’m really impressed with what he is doing. I also feel like as a general dentist he is much more likely to trust the body and to do minimal intervention for the greatest amount of healing which is another basic perceptive nature pathic medicine. So I am very excited about his work, I’ve been very excited to meet him. I have a colleagues whose son is doing remarkably better as a result to Dr. Tanners treatment. So thank you for listening.

Hi, I am Sister Johnson. I woke up one morning and I just could not open my mouth and it sucked. There was just so much pain in my jaw and I could not figure out what was happening. So, I called a guy that someone recommended to me. He told me to ice it and eat soft foods, so I did that for a while, but nothing was improving. So, I started asking around more people to see if they knew of anyone that could help me out and I was recommended to Dr. Tanner’s office. I came in and he was so nice, and he helped me out a lot. He gave me a little retainer type thingy; I do not even know what it is called but I put it in my mouth, and he had me wear it for a week. I really did not want to, but I decided to listen to him, and it was a good idea. Since then the pain has lessened a lot. My jaw does not hurt as much, I can open my mouth further, and I can eat normal foods again. It has been super nice. So, if you have any issues with your jaw or mouth, I definitely recommend Dr. Tanner he is awesome. He is accommodating, he is nice, and he knows what he is talking about. I have been super blessed and my mouth and jaw; they are still healing, but I know that it has been a lot better.

Well we first knew that Kacey was going to need some sort of mouth work when he was born. Honestly, we had trouble nursing, he had to have a lip and tongue tie revised and we knew he had a high palate. So we started looking at different braces options. I had been looking into this for multiple years. Then we moved to Southern Oregon and found Nathan Tanner just over the hill in Medford and started talking to him when our son was about 5 and took probably another 4 years for me to really decide to do it. That was because we started having night terrors. I knew his breathing at night was getting worse, I could hear him breathing through his mouth and a little bit of apnea, stopping breathing and taking a big breath when he was sleeping and then the night terrors started. It was terrifying. I started doing some reading, of course you google everything and found that really the most likely cause was lack of oxygen. So I decided now is the time. We have to make this transition and we got in with Dr. Tanner and within 2 weeks of having the appliance in his mouth and expanding his mouth the breathing at night went normal. He started breathing through his nose no gasping no night terrors at all since starting this and we’ve seen a real growth in his jaw. So, it’s kind of a life savor for us. Even just the little night terror piece because like I said it terrifying to see your child go through something like that.

Hi my name is Charlene Talmon and Ive come to Dr.Tanner because I feel that going to a dentist that is really concerned about the health of his patients is very important to me. I have been seeing a holistic dentist for probably the last 15 or more years. I was directed to start using my mouth guard again, which I had been using for quite some time. That worked fine, but then over a process of time I quit using it. So when I started using it again, it didn’t fit well. It was hitting in places in my mouth that made it uncomfortable. So Dr. Tanner took a look at it and readjusted the bite and did some pretty major adjustments to it. It is so much more comfortable than it was, even when I first got it 15 years ago.

Hi I’m carol. I chose Dr. Tanner for our family’s dentist because he is a natural dentist. I didn’t want any fluoride or things like that so that’s why we initially came to Dr. Tanner. I had a lot of deep pockets; you know when they poke the little thing in your mouth and read all the numbers. I had bad numbers like 6s and 7s and Dr. Tanner was starting to get worried. So, I use a product called Tooth and Gum Formula from Dr. Richard Schultz American Botanical pharmacy. Dr. Tanner was pretty blown away today and he started doing the little numbers and he was like 2, 2, 3, 3, 2 and I’m like “They’re all 2’s and 3’s oh my gosh that’s pretty cool.” So, I had only like one 5 and a couple 4s so it was a pretty dramatic change after using the Tooth and Gum. It’s just a tincture in a bottle and I put 4 droppers in a water pick twice a day. If I can make my pockets go down you can too!

I am Katie and my son Gavin is 10. When we started, he had chronic congestion and his canine teeth had come in right up through his gums. They weren’t down aligned with his teeth and now he is breathing better, he is not congested, he is sleeping better and his teeth are almost in incredibly beautiful alignment. He still has a little ways to go, but I am really impressed by the whole process and how gentle it has been on Gavin. And how we didn’t have to pull any teeth like we were advised by other providers and just the care has been really wonderful. Wonderfully personal and gentle and respectful and I feel like its really laying a foundation for Gavin to have healthy oral cavity, healthy oral habits and just maintain his wellness as he grows into adolescence and adult.

Hi my name is Derrek Scanlon and I am the co-owner of Colibri Gardens Organic Farm and Homesteading School out of Washougal Washington. I am here today because I am very excited to have an orthodontic appliance installed into my mouth. The reason I am having that done is because I have had a number of problems with sleeping. I have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and I have had a lot of difficulties with insomnia over the last 24 years. So I am excited at the possibility at having my airway expanded in order to breathe better. That is the primary reason and the proof will be in the putting, but I am really excited at the possibility of having better breathing at night. I have had a number of health complications over the years and so I am hoping this will be the fix for that issue.

Hi my name is Kathy. I came to Dr. Tanner’s office; I had needed some help with my teeth. I was having problems with the metal in my mouth and I wanted all the metal removed and root canals replaced with zirconium posts to make it safer. He told me about this process of broadening my jaw bones to take away sleep apnea. I did some reading like he made me do and it made so much sense to me that I said yeah let’s go. So that’s what we did. What I have seen so far is it’s slightly uncomfortable, nothing terrible. I talk a little funny, but so what. I have seen better sleep; I am dreaming more so I am going down into deep sleep, which was almost unheard of for me before. My diet had to be adjusted to accommodate the appliance. I have a lot of soup and soft foods but that’s ok too. I feel like I’m really on the road I can see a difference already were only at month one and I can feel a change in my jaw. It feels like its moving forward a little bit, my teeth are clearly moving. I’m just excited for what this will bring to me in the future. Stay tuned for an update.

Hi my name is charity and I wanted to tell you about my experience with Dr. Tanner and my kids and their experience. So we have had Dr. Tanner do orthodontic work on both my kids and he focuses on expansion of teeth, rather than the traditional retractable pulling the teeth inward orthodontics. I really appreciate that he thinks about problems down the road that could occur with retractable and he focuses on keeping the airway open and how that is really beneficial and preventative of Sleep Apnea and different conditions. So he is really kind of the only one that I found that works with this type of expansion and prevention of Sleep Apnea and those kind of things and so we travel all the way from North Carolina to Oregon to have Dr. Tanner work on our teeth and its been a good experience.

Hi I am Katie I had my appliance put in a couple weeks ago and I am feeling a lot better than I did originally. When I left that day I got quite scraped up in my mouth, but after putting wax on things and just getting use to it, things got more comfortable over time. The first couple days were pretty rough but I have gotten a lot more adjusted to talking and eating. My sleep and breathing have already improved so I really feel the benefit already which is rewarding. I am doing this mainly because I have had chronic insomnia for 20+ years and I have tooth decay along my gum-line. I am not getting enough oxygen at night so I am clenching and trying to create more space in my mouth so I can breathe and sleep at night.

Hi my name is Tracie Daley and this is my testimony. I have been struggling with sleep apnea for about 25 years. I didn’t realize what was causing it and I knew that I clenched my teeth at night, and I wake up with headaches all the time. I have a headache all day long because I seem to clench my teeth when I stress. It’s just been an ongoing thing and I had just been frustrated for a long time. I sat down last Thursday with Dr. Tanner and kind of told him what was going on with me. He said I want to try something, and he made me a splint. So I put it on it was fine and comfortable and he said I want you to wear it for 24 hours a day and I was like “oh my gosh” but it ended up being great it was fine. The first night I went to sleep I woke up, well I didn’t wake up, my husband woke me up and I had slept the entire night. I can get really emotional; so I have been wearing it for a about a week now and I have slept every single night. I haven’t gotten up even to go to the restroom; I haven’t woken up. I do have a problem now wanting to get out of bed. Anyway, I love it, it’s wonderful I haven’t had a headache. That’s my testimony

We came to Dr. Tanners office when our daughter was about 6 years old. She had some decay and through coming to the office we learned about airway orthodontics. Our daughter had been born with what one would call Sleep Apnea and so she would seemingly stop breathing in the night. We would sometimes wake her up. There were several books I had read and became very interested in this as a way to help our daughter. So we began an expander for her jaw and within a few days of wearing the expander she started to sleep through the night and her snoring ceased and any sign of Apnea had also ceased. It was quite remarkable and so now we are several months into it and are very pleased with the results and are looking forward to the end results coming down the line. We chose airway expansion orthodontics for her health and longevity and I think having straight teeth will be something that comes out of this as well but that was not our motive for going this route. If someone were considering orthodontics I would absolutely highly recommend this path versus a conventional path because having a constricted airway is quite challenging to ones health and having restful sleep healing sleep in the night is so important. Opening up the airway through the expansion of the jaw and developing the jaw is going to allow one to have this oxygenation throughout the night bringing in health throughout ones day and throughout ones life, whereas one might have a beautiful smile with conventional orthodontics but they might not have the jaw development that is so crucial to have.

My name is Marie. I am from Gothenburg Sweden. I came because originally, I had a cracked tooth that needed to be taken care of. During the visit I started talking with Dr. Tanner and he was asking me about different symptoms because of bite marks and things he had seen inside my mouth. Those symptoms were like being tired, having trouble breathing, waking up at night a lot and all those things were exactly what I was experiencing. It interested me because I had been trying to get help for that for a lot of years through medical doctors and I’ve had no luck. He explained the airway expansion treatment and it sounded like exactly what I needed. So yesterday I got the first I don’t know what it’s called; the first expansion installed, and I slept really good actually. The first night I didn’t wake up at all I feel really good today despite being jetlagged. It’s not painful at all which I was surprised; I thought I would feel pressure or something in my mouth and really, I feel nothing. It feels a little funny and you talk a little strange at first, but there’s no pain to it. So I’m really excited about the future of this and what I’m going to be experiencing more and more every day.

Dr. Tanner cares about your whole person and I talk a lot and he lets me talk and tell him about how my life is going.
