What is the Connection Between Snoring and Sleep Apnea?
Snoring happens when the back of your tongue and throat relaxes and restrict airflow. Snoring is caused by passing air through a small hole, which then causes the tissues to vibrate and make a "snoring" sound. Someone who "just snores", who gains a few pounds, or who has a few alcoholic drinks could become someone with sleep apnea. An association between habitual snoring and electrocardiographic changes and arrhythmias has been reported.
